Closing of the Bones

In the Yucatec Maya healing tradition of

Miss Beatrice Torres Waight of Santa Familia, Belize

I am so honored to have been given permission to offer the traditional Yucatec Maya Closing of the Bones Ceremony.

This is a traditional postpartum ceremony intended to help Mama come back to her Self and close the portal after birth. It is a Rite of Passage that honors, acknowledges, and nurtures.

during labor, our spirit travels to the edges of the universe and back to retrieve our baby and birth them into the world.

Physically, our bones open to let our babies through. There is also a vast opening that happens spiritually, emotionally, and mentally during the pregnancy and birthing process. In sacred space, supported by our loved ones, this ceremony a potent way to close the portal and anchor in your new reality.

A Closing of the Bones Ceremony is not only beneficial after a full term labor, but also after abortion, miscarriage, and is profoundly healing even years later. You will especially benefit if you are feeling lingering energy that needs healing, tending, and completion.

A Closing of the Bones ceremony usually takes anywhere from 2-3.5 hours. With my current office space, you are welcome to bring 1-2 beloveds to attend, participate, and hold space. I may have an assistant present to help facilitate the work. This ceremony is done once Mama has finished bleeding, typically 8-16 weeks postpartum, but can also be done anytime after, even years later. Once Postpartum, always postpartum. All of this will be discussed in more detail upon booking.

We start by having tea, a foot bath for Mama, and explain the ceremony to everyone so they know what to expect. Once we are ready to shift, Mama gets cozy on the massage table with blankets, pillows and warm stones. We will do traditional Earth-Centered healing techniques needed to prepare Mama for the bones to be closed which may include: plant brushings, breathing in aromatic herbs, rattling, shamanic bodywork, soul retrievals, and more. I will center Mama’s womb with Yucatec Maya Abdominal Massage and then will begin to “close the bones”.

At the close of the ceremony we give thanks, sing and let Mama rest on the table. Once the ceremony is closed we will have some lime water or other final beverage, space to share or process the events (while not getting in our heads about it), and payment will be collected. Guests of Mama are encouraged to bring a small self-care gift for Mama to take home and a snack to share.
